The Waterloo Road cast for the new series includes Kym Marsh, Adam Thomas and Angela Griffin

The wait is almost over, that’s what we’ve all been wishing for since that big announcement: Waterloo Road will return early next year and the iconic school drama has unveiled the first new images of the drama ahead.

The main cast includes some notable stars, including the return of Angela Griffin, Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths as Kim Campbell and Donte and Chloe Charles.

Former Coronation Street stars Kym Marsh, Rachel Leskovac, Ryan Clayton and Sonia Ibrahim will also join the show, which will comprise seven-hour episodes.

Adam Thomas’ granddaughter Scarlett and son Teddy will even play child characters in Donte and Chlo’s family.

As a new school year begins, a peaceful protest turns into a school riot, and the day’s events will have huge consequences for everyone involved.

A spokesperson for the show said: “Throughout the period, Waterloo Road teachers and parents will have to learn on their feet as they try to navigate the ever-changing social landscape – from teenage homelessness to the cost of living, being LGBTQ+, racism , sexism, mental health, and everything else facing young teenagers today.

‘In the chaos, students, teachers and parents still find time for friendships, fun and some romance.

‘The pupils have a lot to deal with during this time but will learn to rely on each other to survive the year and try to stay out of detention as much as possible.

“Riots, scandals, broken families and challenging kids – for principal Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin) and her team, fighting fires is a way of life.

“Who said education is easy?”

It absolutely feels like the Waterloo Road we all know and love!

Other actors playing the adult characters include Vincent Jerome, James Baxter, Jo Coffey, Shauna Shim, Neil Fitzmaurice and Katherine Pearce (Amy Spratt).

Those playing pupil characters include Adam Abbou, Priyasasha Kumari, Noah Valentine and Adam Ali.

The show has always been known as a platform for young and regional talent.

Originally airing from 2006 to 2015, Waterloo Road is a hugely successful drama and has attracted new and loyal audiences since it was released as a box set on the BBC iPlayer in 2019.

During the Covid lockdowns, many Waterloo Road fans have enjoyed rewatching the series.

Waterloo Road has seen the birth of many new stars who have risen to stardom.

Jenna Coleman – who played Lindsay James – has appeared in shows such as Doctor Who and ITV’s Victoria, Katie McGlynn played Sinead Tinker in Coronation Street.

Executive Producer Cameron Roach enthused: “I’m really excited to be working with the BBC and Wall To Wall, to rekindle the iconic brand of Waterloo Road.

“The vital and urgent stories unfolding in schools across the UK provide incredible and emotionally powerful themes, which we are thrilled to bring to a new generation of fans.

“Waterloo Road will continue its reputation for kickstarting, supporting and enabling careers both in front of and behind the camera, in a truly inclusive way, from our base in Greater Manchester.”

Angela Griffin, who returns as now principal Kim Campbell, said at the time of the revival announcement: “I feel truly honored to be joining the new Waterloo Road series. It’s exciting to be back as Kim and I can’t wait to explore her life, her character and how she has evolved since we last met her.’

“The writers have some amazing storylines planned and I can’t wait to welcome viewers to Waterloo Road.”

Adam Thomas smiled: ‘I’m so excited to be back where it all began! Waterloo Road has been a huge part of my life and career so going back 15 years is a dream come true.

‘I feel so happy to have had the opportunity to get back into acting and doing what I love! I can’t wait to see some old faces and some new ones. I know this series will be the best ever…’

Katie Griffiths added: “I’m incredibly excited to be returning to Waterloo Road, loved by all who make it and watch it!

‘Chlo was my first professional acting role and I feel so lucky to be a part of the show again. I can’t wait to see what stories unfold!’

Waterloo Road will return in January 2023 on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
