How many celebrities have said ‘I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!’?

Since it first aired in 2002, a total of 254 contestants have entered the jungle of I’m a Celeb

Season 22 of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is well underway, with plenty of drama already brewing in the jungle. Returning to Australia for the first time since 2019, this year’s lineup includes singer Boy George, former health secretary Matt Hancock and royal father-in-law Mike Tindall.

Hancock’s selection has proved controversial, with the MP for West Suffolk Down Under when parliament is in session. After announcing that he would be appearing on the show, he lost his role as Tory Whip and will sit as an independent.

While, singer Boy George also raised eyebrows after it was revealed he served time in prison after being convicted of assault and false imprisonment in 2009.

Celebrities have taken part in the infamous bushtucker trials, facing creepy crawlies, snakes and spiders to collect stars that can be traded for food. However, if it all gets too much, they can give up just by shouting “I’m a celebrity…get me out of here!”.

But how often does that really happen? Here’s how many celebrities have said “I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!”

When did I start becoming a celebrity?

I’m a Celebrity first hit our screens in 2002. The series was launched on ITV and featured a modest group of eight well-known names. Contestants included socialite Tara Palmer-Thompkinson and paranormalist Uri Geller. The winner of the first season was radio DJ Tony Blackburn.

How many contestants were there on I’m a Celebrity?

Since the series’ inception, 254 contestants have appeared on I’m a Celebrity. The series has hosted many famous faces and has even been responsible for romance, with television personality Katie Price and singer Peter Andre falling in love on the show in 2004.

Not all celebrities decide to stick it out, however, in the history of the show, 18 have retired or left the jungle before being barred from the audience.

What if a celebrity says “I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!”?

The phrase can be yelled at when a celebrity enters a Bushtucker trial and it all becomes too much. If they shout, “I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!” they will be removed from the process and it will finish.

This can have a knock-on effect for the camp, as celebrities have to go through trials to win food. It’s not common for contestants to shout the line out and call it quits.

The famous line is uttered by I’m a Celeb hosts Ant McParlin and Declan Donnelly, but some celebrities have also shouted it out of fear or frustration while taking part in the Bushtucker trials on the reality show.

In 2006, journalist Jan Leeming and stylist Scott Henshall took part in what is often cited as the worst Bushtucker rehearsal performance in show business history. Scott had to dance ten songs as the bugs fell on his head from above, the celebrity only lasting one song before yelling, “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me out of Here!”.

In 2018, Anne Hegerty, also known as The Governess on The Chase, screamed out the words after being covered in mealworms in her first Bushtucker trial, escaping after just one round. Speaking of her experience returning from the field she explained: “I did the first one in 90 seconds. It was fine. I have two stars. Then it all went pear-shaped. Absolutely freaking out disgusting.

“And I walked out and I was just covered in dirt and mealworms and I was like no, not anymore, I can’t do this, so I yelled I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!”
