Longtime Asheville sports radio host Pat Ryan dies of cancer

Pat Ryan hosts his own radio sports talk show, the WISE Guys, with regular contributor, longtime high school football coach Charlie Metcalf of the Asheville Radio Group building on February 6, 2019. Ryan died of cancer on November 17th.

The Asheville sports world just lost someone special.

Pat Ryan, the longtime host of radio sports talk show The WISE GUYS, died at 5 a.m. Nov. 17 at home after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. His wife Kathleen was at his side. He was 57 years old.

Ryan has co-hosted and hosted The WISE Guys since its inception in 2005 on local radio station WISE (1310-AM). On the show, Pat interviewed everyone from high school student-athletes to former NFL Hall of Fame head coach Marv Levy. He co-hosted the show with Bill McClement until 2018 when McClement left the station. Ryan then hosted the show with guest hosts for the past four years.

Show business was a passion for Ryan. He bought time from the radio station and then went out and sold endorsements. Pat believed the area needed a local sports radio talk show and nothing stopped him from producing the show, not even cancer. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in the spring of 2018, but that didn’t stop him from being on the air five days a week from 3-6pm
