Quentin Tarantino helped make the Revival series

Fans can thank Quentin Tarantino for Raylan Givens’ return in next year’s miniseries Justified: Primordial city. A conversation with Timotheus Oliphant Of Elmo Leonard on the set of Once upon a time in Hollywood led to the resurgence of the FX series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Dave Andron and Michele dinner details how they were considering adapting Leonard’s 1980 novel Primeval city as a separate project when they got a call from Olyphant. “[O]One day the phone rang, and it was Tim Olyphant who said, “I was sitting on set with Quentin, and we were talking about this book, Primeval city. We thought it was going to be a great year Justified.’ So we started teasing the idea, and FX was involved.” Tarantino is a known fan of Leonard’s crime novels, and adapted one, 1992 Rum punchin his 1997 feature film Jackie Brown; at one point he was even assigned to direct some of Primeval cityof the episodes, but has since dropped out of the project.


Primeval city was Leonard’s first novel set in his native Detroit, and has been the subject of a number of other attempts to adapt the story of psychotic outlaw Clement Mansell, the “Oklahoma Wildman,” and his chaotic rampage through the Motor City. Legendary director Sam Peckinpah he was interested in adapting it in its later years, and Tarantino himself was interested in filming it. For the miniseries, the novel’s protagonist, Detroit homicide detective Raymond Cruz, will be replaced by Justifiedstarring Raylan Givens. Although Givens was not a character in Primeval city novel, appeared in novels Immediately and Riding the rapas well as the story Fire in the holewhich served as the basis for Justifiedintroducing Givens’ nemesis, Boyd Crowder. Justified ran for six seasons on FX, coming to a close in 2015.

In addition to Oliphant, Justified: Primordial city stars Aunjanue Ellis, Boyd Holbrook, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Roomand Viviana Olifante, daughter of Timothy Olyphant, as daughter of Givens. Andron teases that “some old friends” from Justified it will also show up. Much of the Justified the production team will come back included Graham Yost who will serve as executive producer; while Dinner and Andron co-write, executive produce and serve as co-showrunners. Chris Provenzano, Sarah Timbermann and Charles Beverly by Timberman-Beverly, VJ Boydand Taylor Elmore will executive produce, as well as Peter Leonard of the Elmore Leonard estate.
