The Batman comic features the Joker becoming pregnant and giving birth

The latest chapter in the Joker’s nefarious arc may be the most unusual villain of DC Comics arc: she gets pregnant.

In the latest issue of the DC Comics series, “The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing,” Batman’s nemesis carries and gives birth to a baby boy.

If that sounds weird, that’s how the graphic novel company intended it. On its website, DC Comics touted the issue as containing Joker’s “most bizarre caper”.

Readers might be tempted to think this is part of DC’s attempt to do a wake-up, LGBTQ-inclusive storytelling with The Joker being a transgender man who undergoes a typical pregnancy, though it’s not that simple.

In this volume, created by Matthew Rosenberg and Carmine Di Giandomenico, the “clown prince of crime” becomes pregnant with an unnatural curse and gives birth in a way that makes you vomit, literally.

The backstory for this latest issue detailed how Joker wanted to pursue an heir in a more traditional way, courting superheroine Zatanna to start a family with him. Even as his advances are rebuffed and the tables are turned on Joker in a surprisingly disturbing way.

In the DC universe, Zatanna is a magic user who can cast spells by speaking backwards. Troubled by the Joker’s attempt to woo her, she casts a spell on him to ensure that “no one else ever will [the Joker’s] baby,” reads the comic.

Though, as with many magical spells in fiction, the curse doesn’t work as intended. Rather than turning the Joker into a female repellant as one would expect, the spell causes the villain himself to become pregnant and have her baby.

How this happens throughout the issue may be one of DC Comics’ strangest moments in recent memory. Joker gives birth by vomiting a kind of brown goo which, after leaving his body, transforms into a little boy who looks just like Joker.

The comic depicts the Joker and his offspring staring at each other, in love. A shared thought bubble between the Jokers reveals that they both simultaneously think, “That’s so good.”

It goes without saying that not everyone is a fan of this new Batman storyline. Critics have voiced their unease on Twitter in recent days, with many pounding on what they see as the strange political implications of him.

Former GOP congressional candidate Robby Starbuck chimed in about the new issue, tweeting, “In the new Joker comic she gets pregnant and gives birth. Yes, the Joker is trans now. At least the character is the prankster because a pregnant woman who thinks she’s a pregnant man is the definition of a prankster. Who else is fed up with this madness?

Conservative influencer Nick Adams noted, “The latest issue of ‘The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing’ comic features a scene where the Joker, a MAN, becomes pregnant. That is NOT how it works! I ask for a full and complete BOYCOTT of The Joker until further notice. What’s next, an all-electric Batmobile?!

Seemingly exasperated by the ridicule, YouTube talk show host Steven Steele tweeted, “JUST IN: DC Comics got The Joker pregnant in their latest issue, because of course they did.”

YouTuber and comic commentator Ethan Van Sciver quashed the rumor, writing, “DC Comics is getting weirder, allowing more perverts and fetishists to make their classic characters grime grotesque. Friends, BATMAN is your latest salable comic book franchise.

Discussing one of the creepier scenes depicted in the issue, he added, “Regular readers might not like Atomic Skull giving the Joker a prenatal pelvic exam.”

This wacky new entry in the Batman/Joker saga is available now in most major comic book stores as well as on Amazon and Apple.
