The WVU E-sports team heads to the National Finals in Texas

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – The WVU E-sports team started in October 2021.

The team is in Dallas, Texas for the Red Bull campus clutch e-sports tournament.

This is the national final and the team is competing against 13 of the best teams from around the state.

If they win, they will go to the world finals in Brazil.

Josh Steger is WVU’s Director of Electronic Sports.

He said it’s an incredible experience for the team.

“Right now, we’re competing for the best team in the United States. The opportunity to go and represent USA almost as an Olympic team basically to Brazil, and all other schools from different countries is going to be a very amazing experience that you can’t get anywhere, or most people never have an opportunity to even compete in something like this, and it’s just great that they’re doing it for video games at this point.

Steger said they currently have four games Madden, Valorent, Rocket League and Call of Duty.

The Red Bull tournament only plays Valorent. It’s a 5v5 competitive game where you attack or defend your faction from other players.

He said it is an extremely long process to prepare for.

“From a competitive standpoint, it’s really about getting all the right people together to form a team and make sure they understand the mission objectives and the details of the game. Administratively he’s really giving us the support of campus, faculty members and the dean’s office, and letting them know that esports is here and we’re here to stay.”

Steger said they have 21 players on their varsity squad and about 800-1,000 on their club team.

She said they are looking to expand the team and are also looking to create an all-girls team.

Along with that, they want to get more people involved for major and minor esports.

“Hopefully, the people who will come and support the esports team will also take part in our minor and major that we are building on campus. We’re doing a great job of engaging folks in the industry, and they’re giving students literally hands-on work experience through classroom work, and that’s almost non-existent in this space right now, and so we’re just hoping to pioneer that. which is e-sports in college.

The hope is to build spaces on campus that students can use for multiple purposes in the future.

Steger said you can stream the team at the tournament from their Twitter account linked here.
